Survivor vs. Pick 'Em Pools: Which Format Fits Your Group?
7 min read · Updated October 2026
Survivor and pick 'em are the two most popular football pool formats, and they create very different seasons. One is a slow-building elimination drama; the other is a weekly contest everyone can win. Choosing the right one for your group is the single biggest factor in whether people are still paying attention in December.
How survivor works
Each player picks one team to win each week. If the team wins, the player advances; if it loses, the player is out. The catch is that you can use each team only once all season, so picking the biggest favorite every week eventually becomes impossible.
The last player standing wins. If everyone left is eliminated in the same week, the pool needs a rule — usually they all survive, or the prize splits.
How pick 'em works
Players pick the winner of every game on the weekly slate. Correct picks earn points, the best score wins the week, and season totals feed a leaderboard. Nobody is eliminated, so a bad week costs you a week, not the season.
Engagement over a season
Survivor is most exciting early: upsets in weeks two through five can knock out a large share of the field. By midseason most players are spectators. Pick 'em keeps everyone playing every week, which matters for offices and families where the social side is the point.
- Survivor — high drama, short engagement for most players.
- Pick 'em — steady engagement, more ties, more weekly winners.
- Hybrid — a pick 'em with elimination for players who miss a win target keeps both.
Strategy differences
Survivor rewards planning: saving strong teams for later weeks, avoiding the team most of your pool is picking, and reading the schedule for favorable matchups. Pick 'em rewards spotting the few genuinely contested games each week and occasionally fading popular favorites to separate from the crowd.
Which to choose
For a casual office or family group, pick 'em is the safer choice. For a group of dedicated fans who enjoy strategy and suspense, survivor works well, especially with a buy-back or two lives. Many commissioners run both side by side so players can join either or both.
